Understand the Basics of Concrete Floor Polishing

Polished concrete eliminates the need for floor waxing, so the maintenance cost and hours can be spent on doing other tasks. Concrete polishing can also be applied even on old, sound concrete floors.

The floor lasts long and just need to be refurbished, which is inexpensive than the other floor systems. Sometimes polished concrete is mistaken to be a marble flooring as it is glossy and smooth. As the flooring is reflective, lighting within the facility increases.

The polished concrete sheen level can be chosen ranging from high-gloss to satin suitable according to the aesthetic and maintenance needs of the facility. You can also choose any color, embed aggregates or attractive objects or create patterns into concrete flooring before polishing.

It is a perfect flooring material that can be applied in warehouses, hotels, retail stores, private residences, office buildings, etc. They can handle heavy foot traffic and forklift. Polished Concrete Specialists from Perth have been dedicatedly offering high-quality services for more than two decades. Rough polishing

Heavy-duty polishing machines are used. It is just like sanding wood. The machines have fine diamond grits bonded in a metallic matrix. The disk is coarse to remove stains, minor pits, blemishes, or light coating, thus preparing the floor for final polishing. Generally, rough polishing is a 3 or 4 step process but depends on the concrete condition.

Fine grinding or lapping

Diamond abrasives embedded in resin or plastic matrix is used to fine grind concrete surface. Finer grits are used in this lapping process to get the desired floor sheen. Switching to finer grits is determined by the polishing experts after they observe the floor surface.

During the polishing process, the densifier is used to close concrete floors. Thus, the need for topical coating reduces.

Final polishing step

During final polishing, a special commercial polishing compound is spread on the surface to gain a little more sheen. These compounds even help to clean the residue left on the surface and thus a dirt-resistant finish is achieved.

Two concrete polishing methods

  1. Dry polishing – In the industrial sector dry polishing method is used because it is more convenient, faster, and Eco-friendly.
  2. Wet polishing – Water is used to cool diamond abrasives and eliminate grinding dust. Water acts as a lubricant and reduces the friction, thus the abrasives life increases.

The key difference between both methods is the final clean up. Wet polishing creates slurry, which needs to be collected and disposed of in an Eco-friendly way. Dry polishing needs no water but has a floor polished hooked to the dust-containment system, thus the mess gets vacuumed.

The majority of contractors use both methods. Dry polishing is used during the initial grinding process when more concrete gets removed. After the surface becomes smooth the crews switch from metal-bonded to fine resin-bonded abrasives and generally opt for wet polishing.

With concrete polishing, you can enjoy a durable, easy to clean, and low-maintenance flooring option. They always fulfill OSHA flooring standards.

Concrete polishing is not a DIY project as there is a need for expertise and the use of specialized equipment. So, hire professional concrete polishers!
